How many hashtags should musicians use?
Since December 2025 Instagram counts at most 5 hashtags per post, caption and comments together, so each one has to earn its place. YouTube shows up to three hashtags next to the video title and treats piles of tags as spam. TikTok has no small cap, but a few precise tags still beat a wall of generic ones.
The tags that work describe the music in the words a listener would search: the genre and subgenre, the scene or city, the mood, and the release itself. Huge tags like #music or #newmusic are flooded every second, so a post disappears from them almost immediately.
Tips that work
- Mix one or two broad genre tags with specific ones for your subgenre and city
- Make one tag that's yours (artist or release name) and use it every time
- Put the strongest three first on YouTube, since only three show by the title
Common mistakes
- Copying the same block of tags onto every post
- Tags that have nothing to do with the music, used only because they're popular
- Hashtags inside a Spotify pitch, where they mean nothing

Hashtags help people find the post; the caption is what makes them press play. Describe the track and get a caption with a hook and a call to action.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags should musicians use?
On Instagram, 5 at most: since December 2025 it counts only 5 hashtags per post. Pick your artist tag, your genre, your city scene and the release. On TikTok you can use more, but a few precise tags still work better than a long generic list.
Should I use the same hashtags on every post?
Rotate them. Keep your artist tag and genre core, and change the release and scene tags to match what the post is about.
