When should you upload, pitch and announce a release?

Most of a release's chances are decided before release day. Upload to your distributor about four weeks ahead: stores need time to process the release, and the song has to show up in Spotify for Artists before you can pitch it. Spotify asks you to pitch at least 7 days before release, which is also what gets the song onto your followers' Release Radar.

Announcing two weeks out gives you time for a pre-save campaign and a couple of teasers without fans losing interest. Release day itself is for posting everywhere and answering comments; the week after is where a second clip or a thank-you post keeps the song in feeds.

If the track was made with AI tools, add three steps: check that your tool's plan gives commercial rights, tick your distributor's AI disclosure, and label AI use when you post.

Tips that work

  • Release on the day your distributor and Spotify for Artists both show the song as scheduled, not the day you finish mixing
  • Export the plan to your calendar so the deadlines remind you
  • Plan the artwork and texts before uploading; a late change can delay the release

Common mistakes

  • Uploading a few days before release, which leaves no time to pitch
  • Announcing without a pre-save link ready
  • Treating release day as the finish line instead of the start

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I plan a music release?

Four weeks is a comfortable minimum for an independent single: it leaves time for distribution, a Spotify pitch three to four weeks ahead, and two weeks of announcements and teasers.

When is the Spotify pitch deadline?

Pitch at least seven days before release so the song can reach your followers' Release Radar. Earlier, ideally three to four weeks ahead, gives editors more time to listen.

Does the calendar file work with Google Calendar and Apple Calendar?

Yes. The .ics file adds each step as an all-day event and can be imported into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook.
