What to put in a YouTube music video description
A description can be up to 5,000 characters, but only the first couple of lines show before viewers tap "more". Put the artist, the song and the listening link there. Below it, the credits, lyrics or chapters, and your channel links do their work for search and for the people who scroll.
Hashtags in the description can appear by the title: YouTube shows up to three of them. Add more than a few and they start to look like spam, which YouTube's policies treat as such.
If the song or video was made with AI, say so in one plain line and use YouTube's altered or synthetic content setting when you upload.
Tips that work
- Write the first line for someone who has never heard of you
- Credit everyone who worked on the video; people search for directors and producers
- Add timestamps for long videos so YouTube can show chapters
Common mistakes
- Leaving the default text or a single link as the whole description
- Stuffing lists of keywords or dozens of hashtags
- Different titles or spellings than on Spotify, which splits search results

Create a complete release description
The builder formats what you already have. If you also need the opening lines and the story behind the video, describe the track and get a full draft.
Frequently asked questions
What should a music video description include?
Artist and song in the first line, a streaming link, a sentence about the song or video, credits, social links, chapters for longer videos and three or four hashtags.
How do YouTube chapters work?
List timestamps in the description, starting with 0:00, each followed by a title. YouTube turns them into chapters when there are at least three and the first starts at 0:00.
