"New video!!! Hope you like it. Like and subscribe. #indie #music #band #newmusic #video"
"Official video for 'Cold Water' by Paper Harbour, shot on a borrowed 16 mm camera at Orłowo pier, with our friend Zosia behind the lens. Listen everywhere: [link] Paper Harbour are Kasia, Michał, Ola and Piotr. Autumn shows: [link] #paperharbour #indiepop #gdynia"
What makes a good YouTube music video description?
The description is where viewers find the streaming link, the credits and the story behind the video, and it's one of the texts YouTube reads to understand what the video is. The first lines show above the 'more' button, so they need to say who, what and where to listen. Timestamps turn into chapters when they follow YouTube's format.
- • Opening lines: artist, song and one sentence about the video
- • Streaming link right after the opening
- • Chapters: at least three timestamps, starting at 0:00
- • Credits: writers, producer, mix, director
- • Social links and three or four relevant hashtags
Writing for indie releases
Indie videos are often low-budget and personal: a live session in a flat, a one-take video, a friend behind the camera. The description is where that story and the credits live, and where fans look for the band and the streaming link.
Name the subgenre
Tempo: Wide range; tempo matters less than mood and arrangement here.
Words that tell the scene what it is
What to include
- ✓Say how the video was made in one line: where, how many takes, who filmed it.
- ✓Credit every band member and the director; indie audiences read credits.
- ✓Put the streaming link and upcoming shows near the top.
- ✓For live sessions, add chapters per song.
- ✓Keep hashtags few and specific: the genre, the city, the band name.
Common mistakes
- ✕No streaming link
- ✕Missing director and band credits
- ✕A wall of generic hashtags

Why music video descriptions often fall short
We built Textlino because we kept running into the same problems.
'New track out now lol' isn't a description
Many artists paste the same two lines under every video. Viewers who want the credits, the lyrics or the streaming link don't find them.
People search YouTube for music
Artist name, song title and genre in the text help the video show up for people looking for exactly that.
Missing credits look careless
Producers, mixers and directors expect to be credited, and labels, bookers and music supervisors notice when they aren't.
It's one more task on release day
When the video is finally done, writing a proper description is the last thing anyone has energy for.
