See the difference
Same artist, same track. One writes alone, one uses Textlino.
"New techno track out now, please add it to your playlists. It's a banger and I worked really hard on it!"
"'Breakwater' is a 128 BPM deep house track from Hamburg producer Jonas Weber, built on a chopped vocal from an old fishermen's song and a bassline played live on a Juno-106. Made for warm-up sets and late-evening listening. For fans of Ben Böhmer and Kiasmos. Title track and lead single of the 'Breakwater' EP."
What is a Spotify editorial pitch?
A Spotify editorial pitch is the short text you submit in Spotify for Artists so playlist editors can consider an unreleased song. You pitch one song at a time, up to 500 characters, and you can edit the pitch until release day. It's your chance to tell editors what they can't hear in the first 30 seconds: the story behind the song, where it fits and what's happening around the release. A pitch doesn't guarantee a playlist; a clear one makes the editor's job easier.
- • Story and context: what the song is about and why it exists
- • Genre and references: a plain genre and a 'for fans of' line
- • Mood and use: when someone would play it, late night, gym, focus
- • How it was made: collaborators, a notable instrument or setting
- • Release plans: video, tour, radio or press around the release
Writing for electronic releases
Electronic music is programmed by subgenre and use: an editor building a deep house playlist and one building a focus playlist want different information. Name the subgenre precisely, give the tempo and say whether the track has vocals.
Name the subgenre
Tempo: Typically 120–128 BPM for house, 125–140 for techno, around 170–175 for drum & bass, 80–110 for downtempo.
Words that tell the scene what it is
What to include
- ✓Name the subgenre, not just 'electronic'. 'Melodic techno, 124 BPM' tells an editor where it fits.
- ✓Say whether it's vocal or instrumental; many playlists are built around one or the other.
- ✓Describe where it works: peak-time club, warm-up, late-night listening or focus.
- ✓Mention label, remixers or DJ support only if it's real and checkable.
- ✓If there's an extended and a radio edit, say which one you're pitching.
Common mistakes
- ✕Calling it 'EDM' or 'a banger' instead of naming the style
- ✕Listing gear without saying what it sounds like
- ✕Leaving out the tempo
'Slack Water' is a 6-minute melodic techno track at 124 BPM from Hamburg producer Jonas Weber, built on a single Moog bassline and field recordings from the Elbe harbour. Instrumental, with a long breakdown that suits late-night and focus listening. For fans of Kiasmos and Ben Böhmer. Second single from the 'Breakwater' EP.
What makes Spotify pitching hard
We built Textlino because we kept running into the same problems.
Writing about your own music is a different skill
You know how the track sounds, but describing it to a stranger in 500 characters is hard. Most artists stare at the empty box and end up writing 'hope you like it'.
One song at a time
You can only pitch one unreleased song at a time, so you have to pick which song from a release gets pitched. You can still edit the text until release day.
No feedback
Spotify doesn't tell you why a pitch wasn't picked up. You can't learn from a rejection, so the safest move is a pitch that's specific and easy to act on.
Vague pitches give editors nothing to work with
Editors get many pitches. 'This is my new track, hope you like it' says nothing about where the song fits. Specific details, a genre and a reference do.

Step by step
From a few facts about your track to a draft you can edit.
Describe your track
Paste lyrics, a mood description or a few facts about the song. The more specific you are, the more specific the pitch.
Pick a tone
Emotional, professional or hype, to match the release. A debut single and an album lead need different energy.
Get a draft
Textlino writes a pitch that covers the story, the genre, a reference and the release context, within Spotify's limit.
Edit and submit
Add anything only you know, paste it into Spotify for Artists and submit at least a week before release.
